about

Arthur Wildflower, revered horticulturist, died on December 1, aged 78.

The gardener with the name Wildflower became somewhat of a sensation during his tenure at The Butchart Gardens. “Surely, you’ve changed your name. It’s too fitting!” enthused visitors would exclaim. Arthur Wildflower was lovingly referred to in his community as the Wildflower Wizard, concocting numerous hybrids specifically suited to the unique growing conditions at The Butchart Gardens, where he served as Head Gardener for nearly four decades. He has made a lasting impact on the gardens, from cosmetic advancements such as introducing hybrid Mountain Lady’s Slippers in the Butchart colours of red and green for their first evening of dance and fireworks in 1977, to enhancing the success of seeding flowers such as consistently long blooming hybridized streambank lupine which retains its native nectar for the numerous pollinators flying about the gardens.

While working with the Butcharts, Arthur made 37 trips across the western provinces and states, each time compiling and tweaking his seasonal wildflower summary. He would visit other like-minded horticulturists at wildflower preserves and nature education centres, returning with the knowledge, new seeds, and specimens to ensure the beauty and vitality of the gardens remained intact from year to year. “We revered these expeditions with our grandfather. He often tasked us with recording the happenings of the day on a small tape recorder, not just to keep us preoccupied, but also because he preferred to listen back to his ‘little scientists’ as he called us when referencing our findings back home. High escarpments dotted with cushion plants and spotted saxifrage, moonlit oceans of dense steel camas glimpsed beyond open tent flaps, and sunken meadows walled by cliffs of mixed evergreen forests are sights we still conjure with ease.”
